It was with sadness to note the recent passing on 11 January 2020 of a long-term Christchurch Savage Club Orchestral member Pam McLean.

Pam was an accomplished Viola player and her contribution to the Christchurch Savage Club included as an elected Orchestra representative on the council.

NZ Kindred Clubs Southern Group Get Together Report

August 24 and 25 2019

Host: Waimate Savage Club

Members of the Christchurch Savage Club attended this annual event, Savages Maureen Watkins, Jess Mellish, Gary Watts, Lilian and Connie van Elk,

As usual and similar to previous Southern Group’s Get Togethers the hospitality was great.  Also, the organising of this was truly superb.

The Southern Group’s meeting in the afternoon commenced with reports from the eight attending clubs. This included an unfortunate outlining of the many members whom had passed away over the last two years.

Re-elected as Southern Group’s Chairperson; Savage Mr Ian Buckingham and Savage Mr Brian Wilson as Secretary.  Both members of The Waimate Savage Club.

A delicious meal on Saturday night was served followed by excellent entertainment by all attending clubs. Christchurch Savages Jess Mellish, Maureen Watkins, Gary Watts fully participated on stage.

Sunday morning included a lively jam session and a delicious morning tea, this concluded the event.

Many thanks to our 5 members who attended this event and for our overnight accommodation at a nearby Airbnb residence which was tops.

An older lady decided to give herself a big treat for her 70th birthday by staying overnight in a really nice hotel.
When she checked out the next morning, the desk clerk handed her a bill for $250.00. She demanded to know why the charge was so high.
"I agree it's a nice hotel, but the rooms aren't worth $250.00 for just an overnight stay! I didn't even have breakfast."
The clerk told her that $250.00 is the 'standard rate', and breakfast had

beenincluded had she wanted it. She insisted on speaking to the Manager.
The Manager appeared and, forewarned by the desk clerk, announced:
"This hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center which are available for use."
"But I didn't use them," she said.
''Well, they are here, and you could have," explained the Manager.
He went on to explain that she could also have seen one of the in-hotel shows for which they were so famous.
"We have the best entertainers from the world over performing here," the Manager said.
"But I didn't go to any of those shows," she said.
"Well, we have them, and you could have," the Manager replied.
No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, she replied, "But I didn't use it!" and the Manager countered with his standard response.
After several minutes discussion, and with the Manager still unmoved, she decided to pay, wrote a check and gave it to him.
The Manager was surprised when he looked at the check. "But madam, this check is for $50.00."

"That's correct I charged you $200.00 for sleeping with me," she replied. "But I didn't!" exclaimed the very surprised manager.
"Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have."

Don't mess with Senior Citizens!!

From Savage Gary L Watts

Although, we have all had a highly challenging previous year it was a big surprise to personally receive some much more positive news just prior to the end of 2020

As this was because of being awarded in the New Year’s Honours list a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Mental Health.

On advice from our hard working Secretary Lilian it was suggested to include the two special letters in this latest Newsletter in outlining this latest knowledge.

Finally, wishing you all a truly wonderful 2021 and also many thanks for your ongoing support to the Christchurch Savage Club. (which is currently entering its 128th year in operation.
